Getting the Most Out of Your Coffee at Home

Good coffee doesn't need a lab. It needs a few things done right, consistently. Here's what actually makes a difference.

Start with beans that are actually fresh

Coffee starts losing its flavour the moment it's roasted. Beans used within a few weeks of their roast date taste noticeably better than beans that have been sitting around. Grind just before you brew, not the night before. Pre-ground coffee loses aroma fast.

Get your ratio right

A good starting point is 1:15 to 1:17, coffee to water by weight. That's roughly 60 grams of coffee per litre of water. Too little coffee and it tastes thin. Too much and it turns bitter and heavy. Start here, then adjust to taste.

Water matters more than people think

Tap water can carry minerals and chlorine that mute flavour. Filtered water usually gives you a cleaner cup. Temperature matters too — aim for 92–96°C. Much hotter and you'll pull out bitterness. Much cooler and the coffee tastes flat and underdeveloped.

Brew time depends on your method

Pour-over: 2–4 minutes
French press: 4–5 minutes
Espresso: 20–30 seconds

Grind size should match the method

French press: coarse
Drip / pour-over: medium
Espresso: fine

If the grind's wrong, the timing won't save you. Too fine for the method and you get bitterness. Too coarse and it's watery.

Why pre-wetting your filter actually helps

If you're using a paper filter, rinse it with hot water before adding coffee. It clears out any papery taste and warms up your brewer, so your coffee stays at the right temperature while it brews. Small step, real difference.

Store your beans like you mean it

Airtight container. Cool, dark spot. Skip the fridge and the freezer — the moisture in there does more harm than good, and your beans pick up smells they shouldn't.

None of this is complicated. Fresh beans, the right ratio, decent water, and a bit of attention to timing — that's most of the work done. The rest is just brewing it and drinking it.
